Okmulgee Black Hospital Restoration plans progress

Building a Web site is the next step to aid in the restoration of the historic Okmulgee Black Hospital on Wood Drive. The 1922 medical facility will become a cultural center for Okmulgee County, and plans are moving forward quickly in an effort to complete the renovation in time for Oklahoma's 100th Birthday celebrations in 2007.

"We are very excited about having a presence on the Internet to share with people everywhere our plans for the historic Okmulgee Black Hospital. The Web site will help people learn about the project as well as invite them to share their stories and become members of the heritage association to support the restoration project," said Okmulgee County Multi-Cultural Heritage Association President Rae Ann Wilson.

The Okmulgee Black Hospital Cultural Center will offer a variety of exciting and informative programs to educate the public on the history of the Black Hospital in Okmulgee County, the history of the medical personnel who worked at the Hospital, as well as African-American culture and history. Future programs and plans at the Center include educational sessions, cultural programs, permanent exhibits, special exhibits, and guest speakers. The new Web site will capture some of these ideas by offering exhibit and restoration plans as they develop, plus incorporate educational activities and historical information suitable for both educators and students.

The Okmulgee County Multi-Cultural Heritage Association is always seeking new members and charitable donations throughout the Okmulgee County area and beyond. The support section of the new Web site will present donation and membership opportunities to Internet users worldwide. All members of the Okmulgee County Multi-Cultural Heritage Association play a direct role in helping to share Okmulgee County's rich black history with area residents and visitors, as well as restore a very important piece of Okmulgee County's history for future generations.
